From 3-7 February 2020, organisations and business across the country celebrated the 13th annual National Apprenticeship Week (NAW). This week hosted many events such as advice and guidance sessions, webinars, presentations and the NAW conference.
At both local and national levels, NAW links the efforts of those who deliver and benefit from great apprenticeships together for maximum impact and engagement. It also highlights the wide range of opportunities available to people of all ages and backgrounds through a high-quality route to skilled employment. Apprenticeships allow learners to earn a wage and gain new skills and qualifications at multi-level across many professions. It also creates a future skilled workforce for employers.
This is something to be proud of, to promote and to celebrate.
For Genpower, NAW allowed us to recognise the value and importance of apprenticeships to our business and to share the success stories of our learners. It was also a double celebration as our current Apprentice Administrator, Chloe, was also nominated for the 2020 Inspire! Adult Learning Awards in the Young Adult award category! These awards are for “those individuals, families, community projects or organisations in Wales who have shown outstanding passion commitment and drive to improve themselves, their community or workplace through learning” (Learning and Work Institute, 2020). Well done, Chloe, a well-deserved nomination and achievement!
As the exclusive distributor for Hyundai Power Equipment for the UK and Ireland (https://hyundaipowerequipment.co.uk/) our business offers a wide range of opportunities for those looking to start or further their career. These span across finance, admin, IT & marketing, ecommerce, sales, parts, warehouse and workshop. We have successfully worked with a number of young people to achieve both personal and professional development. Chloe’s story is an excellent example of this.
Over the past 18 months, Genpower has worked with a local training provider to support young people into our workplace. Our first learner was Chloe, who initially joined our team on a six month work placement whilst undertaking a Level 1 NVQ in Business Administration. This was Chloe’s first experience of the working world having recently completing her school studies, and due to this she sometimes lacked confidence in her ability and communication skills.
Over the course of the work placement, we worked closely with Chloe to develop her skillset on a professional and personal level concentrating on communication, administration, organisational and team work skills. Chloe was based within a team of administrators and went from strength-to-strength. This was achieved through a comprehensive training plan, an encouraging environment and the combined support of her peers, the training provider and us.
Through this support, Chloe’s confidence and her communication skills developed and it was great to see the progress she was making. In 6 months, Chloe had progressed from basic administration duties to now working on the phone handling customer enquiries and internal calls. Within the team Chloe also now offered her ideas, held eye contact and had more confidence in her abilities. As an employer, it was very rewarding to be key to the support of her personal and professional development and to see the benefits of her hard work and commitment.
Following the completion of her work placement, Chloe was hired on a permanent basis within a newly created Apprentice Administrator role. She has now also progressed on to a Level 2 NVQ in Business Administration and is on track to completing her qualification early. She has also recently achieved her Level 2 Essential Skills – well done, Chloe! It really has been a positive journey which NAW has allowed us to reflect on and celebrate.
Until next year…
National Apprenticeship Week 2020 has been a great celebration of apprenticeships and the impact on individuals, employers and the economy.
